THE RULER APPROACH: BUILDING EMOTIONALLY LITERATE SCHOOLS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES
RULER is a CASEL SELect, evidence-based approach for social and emotional learning developed by Marc Brackett, Ph.D. and colleagues at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER helps students, educators, and families develop the emotional intelligence skills needed to make sound decisions, foster healthy relationships, enhance well-being, and achieve desired outcomes at school, home, and in the workplace.
RULER directly aligns with the Redesigned BC Curriculum and can be connected to each of the Core Competencies.
Tamara Banks has been an educator in the Coquitlam School district for 20 years and has worked at all school levels. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from UBC and studied Vocal Pedagogy at San Diego State University. She received her Master of Education Degree at Western Washington University. She has been an administrator since 2004 and is currently the principal at Hampton Park Elementary School.
Tamara was trained in the RULER approach and RULER Feeling Words Curriculum at Yale University during the summers of 2014 and 2015. The RULER Approach is designed to promote emotionally literate learning communities. Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions are foundational skills for academic success; the RULER approach is a comprehensive whole-school/whole community method for building these essential skills.
