RCMP gathers experts to help parents protect children against cyberbullying, sextortion

The RCMP will hold its first-ever virtual Cross-Canada RCMPTalks Panelist Discussion for Parents on March 15, 2023.

Experts from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, Bullying Canada, and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection will participate in a virtual RCMPTalks session to be held March 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m mountain standard time.

Help is on the way for parents who want to know how to protect and support their children when it comes to cyber bullying, sextortion, substance abuse, and mental health.

“It’s our first ever virtual RCMPTalks session for parents and guardians of children and youth across Canada,” said Red Deer RCMP Cpl. Mike Evans, with the Youth and Community Action Team.

Evans said both Red Deer Public Schools and Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools received information about the RCMPTalks session to provide parents.

He said local officers regularly hear concerns about the topics in the upcoming session, and while the Red Deer Youth and Community Action Team does make presentations at the request of schools, the virtual RCMPTalks session is an opportunity to educate a lot of parents at the same time across the country.

“We don’t always have the parents available and this is reaching the parents at a time when they’re able to be engaged and can learn. This will help,” Evans said.

“Please don’t hesitate. It’s a free event. All it costs is time.”

He said parents sometimes believe they are the only ones with children or youth dealing with these issues, but there are other parents out there with similar concerns. This is an opportunity to hear from experts and the event will conclude with a question and answer period.
